Lucky stood at the top of a pile of snow that had slid off the cabin’s metal roof, with her nose pressed to the window pane. “In there!” she said.

I’m really not dressed for this kind of work, Grace thought as she pressed her knees into the snowbank and used her bare hands to pull herself upward. When she reached her pup’s side she peered through the window, into the room below. It was a bedroom, containing a bed, nightstand, dresser, and chair.

“This must be Bridger’s room,” she said. “Where are the elephants?” She didn’t see any dancing beasts.

“There!” Lucky nudged the glass. She wagged her tail. “See?”

Grace did not. She leaned in more until the tip of her nose touched the ice-cold glass, just like her pup’s. “Where?” she said. Her breath left a cloud of fog that she had to wipe away with her coat sleeve.

“On the nightstand!” Lucky said.

“Oh! Yes, I see them.” The bedside lamp looked antique, as though it belonged in a child’s room. Maybe it’s from Bridger’s childhood, Grace thought. The lamp’s stand was indeed formed in the shape of three elephants standing upright and in a line, arms around one another, trunks flung high, legs kicked outward. “They really are dancing,” Grace said. “Tenley got that right.”

“That lamp is really close to the bed,” Lucky said.

“And Lucky, look at that!” Grace tapped the glass. “The bed’s linens are red.” The bed was unmade, and the red sheets and pillowcases were clearly visible.

Grace sat back on her haunches and tried to think. As she transferred her weight to her heels, she almost slid backward down the steep snowbank. Thankfully, she caught herself and maintained her balance. It was too cold to be rolling around in the snow.

“And the quilt has patches of green!” Lucky said. “Those are Christmas colors. Do you think that means something?” Lucky bumped against Grace in her excitement, nearly toppling Grace for a second time.

Again, Grace managed at the last minute to steady herself. “The holiday color scheme might not be that important,” Grace said. “I’m interested in the color of the linens because of Tenley’s dream. Remember? She mentioned that something red pressed down on her.”

“And the feeling of fighting for air,” Lucky recalled.

“That’s right.” Grace nodded and stroked Lucky’s back. “Good girl. Hm. In the dream, Tenley felt she was channeling a man’s consciousness. This might all fit together.”

“How? You’re way better at puzzles than me.”

“Well…” Now Grace turned to look through the window again. “If Tenley really was picking up on some kind of psychic energy, it could have been Bridger’s thoughts she was getting. Doc Ham says psychics often pick up on fear. Imagine this, Lucky.” She tapped against the glass again, pointing to the bed below. “Imagine Bridger’s in bed, and someone sneaks in to suffocate him. They might have pressed a pillow against his face. The pillow cases are red, and in her dream, Tenley saw only red when she felt she couldn’t breathe.”

“Good
